London's
ultimate landmark is the Tower Bridge. It was the first bridge across the
Thames downstream of the old docks. |
All
bridges in London are funded by a trust fund and not owned by the city.
There is no charge for ships to pass the bridge, even though they need to
give 24 hours notice |
.
The
bridge needed to allow access to the docks for large vessels. Hence an opening
mechanism was required.
|
The
original hydraulic motor is still in the machine room below the pillar.
It is fully operational and was only replaced to reduce maintenance cost. |
The
original drive shaft was disconnected and the original hydraulic motor was
replaced by a new, compact hydraulic motor. All other original mechanics
remain. |
The
accumulator stores water under pressure to supply enough water to raise
the bridge fully. The pressure pumps are located next to the bridge. |
